U.S. Air Force Academy updates installation access procedures, reopening part of Santa Fe Regional Trail

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- The U.S. Air Force Academy (USAFA) says it is updating some of its installation access procedures, including reopening the part of the New Santa Fe Trail that goes through the Academy to the public.

USAFA says it is resuming its Trusted Traveler Program, which allows eligible sponsors, including active-duty service members and cadets, to sponsor up to five people who have Real IDs. They also have to be "legally seated" in the same car as the sponsor.

According to officials, those coming in under the Trusted Traveler Program must stay with their sponsor at all times while on the instillation.

There is also a new 30-day general access pre-registration link for non-military-affiliated visitors. USAFA says the program is for those requesting access to USAFA for things like hiking, biking and fishing. The pre-registration link, which is available on USAFA's website or in person at the Pass and Registration Office, will allow people to apply for a 30-day general access pass, according to officials.

USAFA says guests can only have one general access pass registration at a time, and submitting a new registration voids the old one. According to officials, the link only gives access to designated public and recreational zones and does not include places like the Cadet Area or other places that required card reader access.

USAFA also says the section of the New Santa Fe Trail that crosses USAFA property is now reopened for public use on foot or by bike. Officials remind users to stay on the trail; trespassing onto adjacent USAFA property is not allowed.

More information on the updated access procedures and guidance is available on the USAFA website.
