‘Looked like a missile going down’: Witnesses recount moments after jet crash in Florida

A business jet carrying nine people nose-dived into a South Florida neighborhood Sunday and erupted into a giant fireball, with witnesses saying they can’t unhear the sound, or remove the site of the explosion from their minds.

“I was getting my nails done and we heard a loud zooming sound, and then we felt and heard an impact,” Akemi Graham told Hearst sister station, WPBF Sunday night. “We saw a fireball and then the entire building shook. We didn’t know that it was a jet until a little after, but it checks out, the speed of which everything happened.”

“I heard and felt the boom,” Andrew Mannino told CNN. “The power immediately went out and is still out.”

Another woman told WPBF that the crash sounded like a bomb exploding.

The plane erupted in a massive fireball when it made impact in a residential area near Military Trail and 10th Avenue North.

Nine people that were on board died as a result of the crash, U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed.

The Bahamas-bound jet departed from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas, the Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement.

Video captured from the scene showed chunks of pavement scattered just feet from nearby homes. No injuries were reported on the ground.

WPBF said Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, after viewing videos and images of the crash, said the crash “looked like a missile going down.”
