CENTENNIAL, Colo. (KRDO) -- The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA)'s Rocky Mountain Field Division (RMFD) says it collected over 22,000 pounds of unwanted, unneeded and expired medications during its recent Take Back Day.

The DEA's RMFD operates in four states, including Colorado, Utah, Wyoming and Montana. Officials say 141 law enforcement agencies participated at almost 200 collection sites to take back the medications.

The DEA says in Colorado, 50 departments at 72 sites collected 9,242 pounds of medication. Utah collected over 10,000 pounds, while Montana and Wyoming each collected just over 1,000 pounds.

"We extend our thanks to people in the Rocky Mountain Division who got rid of more than ten
tons of medications the right way," DEA RMFD Special Agent in Charge Mark Putnam said in a press release. "We're also appreciative of our local and state partners who assist in the collection, preventing
potential misuse or abuse of prescription medication."

The DEA says that at its other Drug Take Back Day in April of this year, it collected over 27,500 pounds in the RMFD. According to officials, the administration hosts the Take Back Days the last Saturday in both April and October.

More information on places to drop off unwanted, unneeded or expired medications year-round can be found on the DEA's website.
